Step Into Running: Reasons You’ll Love Running (It’s Not Just Fat Loss)

Posted on September 25, 2026

If you’re lacing up your running shoes for the first time in years (or ever), it’s likely that fat loss is a motivator.

Some people will tell you that running for weight loss isn’t effective. I’m not buying it but even if the claim was true, running is about so much more. Finally fitting back into your favourite clothes might be the incentive right now, but your enjoyment will soon come from other sources. Here are just 10 reasons why running is the sport for you.

#1. Stress reduction

All exercise is good for reducing stress as endorphins are released during physical activity. However, running is arguably the best solution of all. Whether you’re surrounded by the sounds of nature or have some tunes blaring through your headphones (we won’t judge you for still listening to the same songs you did in high school) doesn’t matter. It’s an opportunity to switch off from the stresses of modern life, making it a hugely beneficial addition.

#2. Fitness

Consistent running also helps you become physically fitter, and new runners will often start to see noticeable change within weeks. Feeling faster and stronger undoubtedly improves your life. Meanwhile, increased stamina is sure to enhance many aspects of your life. And your partner’s.

#3. Self-Confidence

You don’t have to focus on fat loss to enjoy the benefits of it as a by-product of running. When combined with the increased strength and fitness gained, it is inevitable that your confidence will grow. After all, you’ll feel more comfortable in your skin – not to mention more confident when comparing yourself to others.

#4. Discipline

Runners don’t always feel motivated, but they get their miles in regardless. This encourages you to develop far greater discipline, especially when you embrace the idea of completing solo runs. It is a skill that subsequently influences both your personal and professional worlds to unlock a greater quality of life.

#5. Attractiveness

Getting fit to look “fit” is another common source of motivation. You will almost certainly become more attractive as a result of running. Without worrying about the scales, you should find that clothes fit you more comfortably. Your skin should improve due to flushing out toxins via sweat while your muscle definition and general body shape should also improve. And the fact you’ll feel more confident adds to your appeal too.

#6. Financial Savings

You may find that there is an initial outlay when you start running. And, we won’t lie, you’ll probably spend a little too much on running shoes over the years to follow. Still, running is far more affordable than other sports or expensive gym memberships. Similarly, your decision to adopt a healthy lifestyle should yield savings in other parts of your life. Not least when thinking about future medical care.

#7. Versatility

In today’s world, especially as a millennial, you need flexible hobbies that you can enjoy on your terms. You can go for a run at any time. You’ll also have the choice of solo runs, running with friends, or even joining a run club. Whether you plan to race or enjoy a more casual approach is up to you. You’re in control. So, if you can’t make it work, you’ve only yourself to blame.

#8. Self-Improvement

Running can be made social or competitive, but it ultimately focuses on self-improvement. Chasing PBs can become quite addictive. You will need to deal with the fact that you’ll find yourself researching tips on how to shave a few seconds off of your 5k. But it’s gotta be better than checking your ex’s latest Facebook status.

#9. Competitiveness

Yes, the real goal is to become a better person than who you were yesterday. But let’s not kid ourselves, beating others in a race is a lot of fun too. You don’t have to become an elite runner to find yourself competing against others. Even if it’s simply overtaking the person who is 50 metres in front of you (and is oblivious to the race you’ve created in your head), you will take a lot of joy from overtaking them. Don’t shy away from it. Enjoy it.

#10. Holistic Glow

Non-runners often pull the classic “How do you know if someone is a runner? Don’t worry they’ll tell you.” crack. It’s accurate and funny, but there is a reason for it. Running elevates your entire life and becomes a part of your personality because you want to celebrate that positivity and share it with others. Frankly, if that makes us wrong, I wouldn’t wanna be right.
