Having launched in 2014, Bognor Regis is one of the older Parkrun events in West Sussex. Flat, fast, and located just a few yards from Butlin’s, it is a firm favourite for locals and visitors alike.
Whether looking for a PB or a little mid-getaway Parkrun tourism, this quick guide is just for you.
TL;DR: Three things to know – 1) it’s a friendly atmosphere and flat course 2) lap one is different to the subsequent laps 3) just be careful of the miniature train track
Lacing Up’s Visit To Bognor Regis Parkrun
If you’re wondering how I knew Bognor Regis Parkrun is so close to Butlin’s, it’s because I visited as part of a short break to the family resort. If you’re a runner who is staying at the holiday park, simply exit by the Waves entrance and cross the road to find yourself at Hotham Park. Better still, you can see the start/finish area almost immediately after entering the park from this side.
My visit coincided with the start of the summer holidays, nice weather, and a pacer event. Unsurprisingly, this resulted in a slightly larger field (395 compared to low 300s on average) but the volunteers dealt with the volume well, getting the event started at pretty much 9 on the dot, just as the clock tower chimed.
The course is flat and virtually all tarmac, which lends itself to both speed and comfort. An initial short lap is followed by three larger laps where you pass a lake, a cafe, and the miniature railway track. A short stint down an alleyway provides further variety, which keeps the run mentally engaging in spite of the lapped nature. You will cross the track again towards the end of each lap, which is something to look out for.
Each lap ends with a straight up towards the bandstand, turning right on the first three laps before heading into the funnel as you finish lap four. It’s an ideal setup for the strong finish.
On the day, my trainer split, thus causing difficulty when turning or stepping out to overtake. Under normal circumstances, though, I think the paths are more than wide enough for smooth passing slower runners and parkwalkers. With four laps, mid-pack runners can probably expect to pass a few people too.
A positive atmosphere, underpinned by the support of the volunteers, apparently extends to a post-run coffee in the cafe. However, having made a promise to hit the swimming pool, I was back at Butlin’s by half nine. Perfect.
It probably wouldn’t be quite as enjoyable on a winter’s day, but some sections enjoy good overhead coverage. So, even then, I would imagine that Hotham Park would be worthy of a visit.
Who Is It Best For?
The course instantly stands out as one that’s great for beginners or families. Non-runners have plenty of spots, most notably the cafe, to take shade and support loved ones. With four flat laps, Bognor Regis would be a great course for “jeffing it” too.
Naturally, runners staying at Butlins will want to get their Bognor Regis tick. The promenade is also nearby, though, making it a good choice for day visitors hoping to explore a new place while getting in their steps.
I have reservations as to whether it’d be a course for an overall PB, mainly due to the number of turns, but it does still accommodate fast times.
Facilities
As well as being a dog friendly and pram friendly course, Bognor Regis Parkrun boasts all the facilities that you could ask for. Toilets are available while the cafe serves a range of food and drinks, including all day breakfasts as well as water for anyone who has forgotten to bring one.
The playground, sports courts, and other attractions will keep youngsters suitably entertained too. Paid parking is available with a total of 47 spaces.
What We Loved Most
On a personal note, the proximity to Butlins was hugely attractive. But the course itself was also a lot of fun despite being four laps due to the variety of sights taken in. There are some courses that leave you feeling a little mentally disengaged, especially if you’re not worried about the clock. This won’t be one of them.
Verdict
Enjoyable? Yes.
A welcoming atmosphere? Yes.
Easily integrated into a visit of Bognor, Butlines or otherwise? Yes.
Would we visit again? Absolutely.
